To the Bishops of Canada:

As you are already aware, the recent tsunami in Southeast Asia left millions of victims in terrible distress, as well as estimates of hundreds of thousands dead. There is an urgent need for aid.

The President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), Most Reverend Brendan M. O'Brien, in collaboration with the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace, is inviting the Bishops of Canada to encourage all their parishes to participate in a national collection for South-East Asia on Sunday, 9 January 2005.

The funds raised by this collection will be distributed by Development and Peace with its Caritas Internationalis partners in the region. Dioceses are kindly asked to forward the results from the collection directly to CCODP as soon as possible.

It is hoped that all Canadian Catholics will respond again in generosity and solidarity to assist those in need.

Msgr. Mario Paquette, P.H.

CCCB General Secretary
