Over the last twelve months, the CCCB has been very active, both nationally and internationally. One of the highlights was the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for America, held in Rome from November 16 to December 12, 1997.
"We had to go to Rome to rediscover America!" declared the Canadian representatives at the end of this remarkable Church event. This meeting, where some 300 participants shared their plans, challenges and vision for the future of the Church, identified a common path for the diocesan churches of the American hemisphere: personal encounter with the living Christ in order to hear the cries of the poor and become more aware of the urgency for a new evangelization.
The real richness of the Synod was seeing how vision for the future,
pastoral initiatives and Church renewal are all centred on the encounter
with the living Christ.
