Dear Prime Minister,

The Catholic Organization for Life and Family (COLF) welcomes your announcement that Senator Sharon Carstairs will take on special responsibility for palliative care by assisting the Minister of Health and working with the provinces, territories and organizations to ensure that palliative care is meeting the needs of Canadian patients, families and care givers.

Senator Carstairs is well placed to take on this responsibility since she was the Chair of the Senate Subcommittee which produced the excellent report, Quality End-of-Life Care: The Right of Every Canadian. The Report proclaimed with hope and compassion the dignity and inestimable worth of the human person until the very end when life is so fragile.

Every person has the right to quality end-of-life care; it is our responsibility as a society, our obligation as members of the human family. Thank you for making palliative care for all Canadians a priority.

Sincerely,

Most Rev. Bertrand Blanchet  Archbishop of Rimouski
Chairperson
Catholic Organization of Life and Family
