This Jubilee year has truly been a year of blessing and grace for the Church in Canada and around the world. The need for God’s Word in our midst is more evident than ever. We are all challenged by the words of Pope John Paul II in his Apostolic Exhortation Ecclesia in America to work for “a new evangelization” that must be “a clear and unequivocal proclamation of the person of Jesus Christ.”
Once again, the Bishops of Canada are calling upon all the faithful to help in this proclamation through their Collection for the Needs of the Church in Canada to be held on September 24. As the Father sent me, so I send you! has been chosen as the theme of this year’s collection, reminding us we all have a role to play in this mission of proclaiming the Good News.
Pope John Paul II tells us in Ecclesia in America that “the lay faithful too, precisely as members of the Church, have the vocation and ministry of proclaiming the Gospel.” The collection campaign is a special invitation for all the faithful to participate with the Bishops of Canada in the daily task of evangelization.
Your contributions help to finance the activities of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), established in 1943 by the bishops in order to work together in proclaiming God’s Word in our society.
Over the past year, the Bishops of Canada, with the help of the professional staff at the CCCB, have been involved in interventions before the Supreme Court of Canada, presented briefs on Parliament Hill, promoted the elimination of Third World debt, worked with aboriginal communities in fostering reconciliation and healing, encouraged and participated in ecumenical and interfaith dialogues, promoted Christian education and helped to develop liturgical resources.
We thank you for your participation in this exciting and challenging ministry.
Yours in Christ,
+ Gerald Wiesner, OMI
Bishop of Prince George
President, Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops
