Apology on Residential Schools by the Catholic Church

The Catholic community in Canada has a decentralized structure.  Each Diocesan Bishop is autonomous in his diocese and, although relating to the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, is not responsible to it.

Approximately 16 out of 70 Catholic dioceses in Canada were associated with the former Indian Residential Schools, in addition to about three dozen religious communities.  Each diocese and religious community is legally responsible for its own actions. The Catholic Church as a whole was not associated with the Residential Schools, nor was the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Lent 2010

This year, Pope Benedict XVI has chosen the great theme of justice for his Lenten reflections.

Citing St Paul’s third letter to the Romans : “The justice of God has been manifested through faith in Jesus Christ” (cf. Rm 3, 21-22). The Holy Father calls upon the faithful to be strengthened through the example of Christ and ‘moved to contribute to creating just societies, where all receive what is necessary to live according to the dignity proper to the human person and where justice is enlivened by love’ (For the full text of the Holy Father’s message)

The importance of recognizing and addressing the social consequences of our failings is also one of the main guidelines for Lent in the 2010 Ordo. Those wishing to prepare for the Paschal mysteries through prayer and a heightened attention to the word of God, will find a number of resources and links available through the CCCB website.
