jodoinAs part of its 34th General Assembly, the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM) will highlight the 20th anniversary of the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for America and the 10th anniversary of CELAM's Aparecida meeting. The Bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean will be meeting in San Salvador, El Salvador, 9 to 12 May 2017. The Most Reverend Daniel Jodoin, Bishop of Bathurst, will represent the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB). He has been invited to speak on two topics: Aparecida's Concluding Document and its pertinence for Canada, and the Canadian reception of the Synod of America and its ensuing Apostolic Exhortation, Ecclesia in America.

Among the major speakers addressing the CELAM meeting will be His Eminence Marc Cardinal Ouellet, Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, who is Archbishop Emeritus of Québec. His presentation will be on The Synod of the Bishops for America: reality and perspectives. Cardinal Ouellet will also preside at a Eucharistic celebration marking the 175th anniversary of the Archdiocese of San Salvador. The 2017 CELAM General Assembly also marks the centenary of the birth of Blessed Oscar Arnulfo Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador, who was martyred in 1980 while celebrating Mass.

The Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for America was held in Rome, 16 November to 12 December 1997, on the theme Encounter with the Living Jesus Christ: the Way to Conversion, Communion and Solidarity in America. The Canadian delegation included 12 Bishops, the CCCB General Secretary and several other CCCB staff. The Aparecida Concluding Document was issued by the Fifth General Conference of the Bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean, which met in Aparecida, Brazil, during May 2007. The Holy Father, then Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, was its principal writer.

The colours of the web site represent the official heraldic insignia of Bishops. The green corresponds to the galero (ecclesiastical hat) and six tassels on each side that make up the crest and supporters of the coat of arms of each Bishop while the gold represents the processional cross.
