Death of the Most Reverend Roch Pedneault, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Chicoutimi

Pedneault(CCCB – Ottawa)... The Most Reverend Roch Pedneault, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Chicoutimi, Québec, passed away on 10 March 2018 at the Hospital of Chicoutimi at the age of 90. After 28 years as Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Chicoutimi, he had submitted his resignation to the Holy Father upon reaching the age of 75, as required by the Code of Canon Law, and which was accepted on 14 June 2002.

Bishop Pedneault was born on 10 April 1927 in Saint-Joseph d'Alma, Québec. After his theology studies at the Grand Séminaire de Chicoutimi, he was ordained a priest in 1953 for the Diocese of Chicoutimi. He continued his studies in science at Laval University where he received a licenciate degree. On 10 May 1974, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Chicoutimi. Since the establishment of the Diocese of Chicoutimi in 1878, Bishop Pedneault was the first diocesan priest of the Diocese who was ordained to the episcopate. As a member of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, Bishop Pedneault served on the former Commission for Social Communications of the French Sector (1979-1983 and 1985-1993) and on the former Commission for Liturgy of the French Sector (1983-1985 and 1991-1995).

The wake will take place at the Alliance funéraire in Chicoutimi on 22 March 2018, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm and from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The following day, Friday, 23 March, he will lie in state at 8:30 am in the Cathedral of Chicoutimi and the funeral Mass will be celebrated thereafter at 10:30 am. The funeral Mass will be presided by the Most Reverend René Guay, Bishop of Chicoutimi.
