bxviAs His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI prepares to resign from the Petrine Ministry on February 28, 2013, at 8:00 p.m., Rome time, Bishops across Canada are organizing special event to celebrate his pontificate.

On Thursday, February 28, the Archdiocese of Edmonton will host an historic celebration of a Mass of Thanksgiving for the gift and ministry of Pope Benedict XVI. The celebration at St. Joseph’s Basilica, Edmonton, will begin at 12:00 noon MT, coinciding with the time in Rome when Pope Benedict’s pontificate officially ends.

The Most Reverend Richard Smith, Archbishop of Edmonton and President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), will be joined by about 20 other Bishops from across Western Canada and the North, who will be in Edmonton for the annual meeting of the Western Assembly of Catholic Bishops, together with clergy and faithful from across the Archdiocese and the Ukrainian Eparchy of Edmonton.

"We are grateful to God for the leadership given to the Church by this extraordinary man,” Archbishop Smith said after the Pope had unexpectedly announced his resignation on February 11 because of his weakening health. “The clarity and beauty of his teachings will be a legacy to enrich the Church for generations.”

A number of other Canadian dioceses are also organizing special events to celebrate the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI, including the Archdiocese of Vancouver, the Archdiocese of Toronto, the Archdiocese of Ottawa, the Archdiocese of Gatineau, and the Archdiocese of Quebec City.
