Most Reverend Douglas Crosby, OMI, Appointed Bishop of Labrador City-Schefferville

Ottawa - (CCCB)  The Holy See earlier today published the appointment of Most Reverend Douglas Crosby, OMI, as Bishop of Labrador City-Schefferville. The diocese has been without a bishop since July 1996 when Most Reverend Henri Goudreault, OMI, was named Archbishop of Grouard-McLennan.

Bishop-elect Crosby, 48 years old, has been English-language General Secretary of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops since April 1996. Having entered the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1967, he made final profession in 1969. He is well acquainted with the Diocese of Labrador City-Schefferville since after being ordained priest in 1975 he was assistant pastor of the Co-Cathedral of Our Lady in Labrador City, 1976 to 1981. Since then he has served as vocations director for St. Peter's Province of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, executive coordinator of provincial services for the same province, pastor of St. Joseph's Parish in Ottawa, provincial superior of St. Peter's Oblate Province, and director of the CCCB Missions Office. President of the Oblate Conference of Canada, 1991-1993, he was a delegate to the 1992 General Chapter of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, served from 1990-1994 on the Administrative Council of the Canadian Religious Conference - Ontario, and was a delegate to the 1994 Interamerican Religious Congress in Santo Domingo.

Born in Marathon, Ontario, Bishop-elect Crosby holds a BA in philosophy and French from Carleton University in Ottawa, as well as a bachelor's degree in theology and a master's in pastoral studies from Saint Paul University, Ottawa.

The Diocese of Labrador City-Schefferville has approximately 13,500 Catholics in 25 parishes and missions.
