Most Rev. Gilles Cazabon, OMI, Appointed Bishop of Saint-Jérôme

cazabon(CCCB-Ottawa) -- The Holy See earlier today announced the appointment of Most Reverend Gilles Cazabon, OMI, as Bishop of Saint-Jérôme, Québec. He succeeds Most Reverend Charles Valois who in January had resigned for reasons of health.

Born April 5, 1933, in Verner, Ontario, Bishop Cazabon has been Bishop of Timmins, Ontario, since his episcopal ordination in June 1992. Bishop Cazabon holds licentiates in theology and philosophy from the University of Ottawa, and a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Louvain, Belgium. He has been a member of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate since 1953, and has served as professor and dean of the faculty of philosophy of the University of Ottawa. From 1973 to 1979 he was provincial superior of the Saint Joseph province of the Oblates, which has its headquarters in Montreal. He also was president of the Quebec region of the Canadian Religious Conference, and was elected to the 1980 general chapter of his religious congregation. Subsequently he became Rector of Saint Paul Seminary in Ottawa, and in 1986 Vicar General of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in Rome.

Currently Bishop Cazabon assists the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops as a member of its Permanent Council and of its Commission for Theology, as well as chair of an ad hoc committee studying the boundaries of Canada's northern dioceses.

The Diocese of Saint-Jérôme has 350,000 Catholics in 69 parishes and missions, with 104 diocesan priests, 112 priests who are members of religious communities and 12 permanent deacons.
