Collection for the Needs of the Church in Canada: Message of the President of the CCCB

Dear friends,

Once again the Church in Canada is appealing to your generosity. This year the Bishops' Collection for the Needs of the Church in Canada will be held Sunday, September 27, in most of Canada's dioceses and parishes. The monies raised support the financial needs of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) and its various agencies.

By means of the CCCB, Canada's bishops are able to exercise their episcopal ministry collaboratively. The CCCB allows them to reflect together on the major questions facing Canadians, respond to international needs and concerns, and cooperate on projects that will help all Canadian Catholics.

The CCCB encourages and promotes initiatives in the areas of social justice, respect for life and family as well as ecumenical and interfaith dialogue. It also undertakes projects that contribute toward the new evangelization that the Holy Father is so much encouraging on the eve of the third millennium. In this second preparatory year for the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000, dedicated to the Holy Spirit, the theme for the 1998 Bishops' Collection is Place in us, Lord, a New Spirit. This refrain, often sung in our churches, reminds us all that we are to be open to being led in the direction that the Holy Spirit wants.

May the Spirit indeed renew our hearts and transform our lives that are such precious gifts from God.

Canada’s oldest diocese, the Archdiocese of Quebec, was established in 1674. Most Reverend François de Laval was its first Bishop.
