New Apostolic Nuncio Appointed for Canada

His Holiness Pope John Paul II today appointed a new Apostolic Nuncio for Canada. He is the Most Rev. Paolo Romeo, currently the Apostolic Nuncio in Colombia. He succeeds Archbishop Carlo Curis who has retired.

Archbishop Romeo was born in Acireale (Catania) on February 20, 1938 and ordained to the priesthood on March 18, 1961. He has a doctorate in Canon Law and entered the Holy See's diplomatic service in 1967. He has served in the Philipines, Belgium, Venezuela, Rwanda as well as with the Vatican's Council for Public Affairs.

The Italian-born diplomat headed the Vatican's diplomatic mission in Haiti for seven years before being named Apostolic Nuncio in Colombia in 1990.

Jean-Claude Cardinal Turcotte, president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, has sent a congratulatory letter to the new nuncio.
