Comment on the Supreme Court of Canada Decision in M v H

smaller text tool iconmedium text tool iconlarger text tool icon

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops deeply regrets that the Supreme Court of Canada in the case of M v H has struck down the opposite sex definition of spouse. The institution of marriage and terms associated with it – such as spouse – have strong roots in the cultures and religions of the world and are immensely important not only to Roman Catholics but to many Canadians.

Could there not have been another way to resolve disputes between people who have been in long-term and interdependent relationships? We hope Governments will be able to find a way to respond to the Judgment of the Court and the concerns of many Canadians for whom the historical definition of spouse has deep meaning.
