New Bishop Named for Valleyfield

(Ottawa -- CCCB) His Holiness Pope John Paul II today named Rev. Msgr. Luc Cyr, PH, as Bishop of Valleyfield, Québec, succeeding Bishop Robert Lebel who retired in June, 2000.

Bishop-elect Cyr was born in Saint Jérôme, Québec, in 1953 and ordained to the priesthood in 1980.  He has been Vicar-General of the Diocese of Saint Jérôme since 1994, and earlier was director of formation and vocations as well as serving in two parishes.

He studied theology at the Grand Séminaire de Montréal and at the University of Montreal, spirituality in Florence, Italy, and obtained a license in moral theology from the Académie Alphonsienne in Rome.

The Diocese of Valleyfield has a Catholic population of 185,000 people and is served by 77 diocesan priests, 26 religious order priests, and 10 permanent deacons, in 63 parishes and missions.
