Apostolic Administrator Named in Diocese of Gaspé

(CCCB - Ottawa) – His Holiness Pope John Paul II today named Most Rev. Jean Gagnon, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Québec, as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Gaspé. The appointment was made following the acceptance of the resignation of Bishop Raymond Dumais from the pastoral governance of the diocese. Bishop Gagnon will have all the faculties of a residential bishop during the vacancy in the diocese and will also continue with his responsibilities for Québec City archdiocese.

Bishop Gagnon was born on May 21, 1941, in Saint Joseph de Lauzon, near Quebec City, ordained to the priesthood in 1966 and named Auxiliary Bishop of Québec in 1998.

Bishop Dumais was born on June 4, 1950, in Amqui, Québec, ordained to the priesthood in 1976 and named Bishop of Gaspé in 1993.

The Diocese of Gaspé has a Catholic population of 94,645 served by 60 diocesan priests, 6 religious order priests, 3 permanent deacons and 171 religious sisters and brothers in 66 parishes and missions.
