Death of Most Reverend André Cimichella, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Montreal

CCCB (Ottawa)... Most Reverend André Cimichella, O.S.M., Auxiliary Bishop emeritus of Montreal, Quebec, died July 21, 2004, at the age of 83.

Born February 21, 1921 in Grotte Santo Stefano, Italy, he came to Canada in 1927. Following his studies in theology and philosophy at Dominican College in Ottawa, Most Reverend Cimichella was ordained to the priesthood within the Servants of Mary (O.S.M.) in 1945.

Between 1946 and 1955, he was the provincial secretary of his order for the region of Winnipeg. In 1955, he returned to Montreal where he was rector and pastor of Notre-Dame du Mont-Carmel Parish. In 1964, he was named Provincial Superior of the Servants of Mary, and less than one month later, the Holy Father appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Montreal and collaborator to Cardinal Paul-Émile Léger, then Archbishop of Montreal. In addition to his episcopal duties, Most Reverend Cimichella was rector of the Montreal cathedral from 1965 to 1990. In February 1996, he retired from the position of Auxiliary Bishop.

Bishop Cimichella was a member of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) Commission for Social Communications (French Sector) from 1979 to 1983.

There will be visitation Friday, 23 July, Saturday 24 July and Sunday 25 July 2004, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Red Room of the Archdiocese, 1071 de la Cathédrale, in Montreal. On the following Monday, there will be visitation in the chapel of rest at Marie-Reine-du-Monde Cathedral (corner of René-Lévesque and Mansfield), beginning at 8:30 a.m. The funeral will take place at the Cathedral on Monday 26 July at 10:00 a.m., presided by Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte, Archbishop of Montreal.
