(CCCB – Ottawa) The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) will hold its annual Plenary Assembly in Cornwall, Ontario, 19-23 September 2005.

This meeting is usually held in October, except for the years in which a Synod of Bishops is held, as is the case this year. On 2-23 October 2005, in Rome, five Canadian bishops will participate in the 11th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod on the Eucharist.

More than 80 bishops from across Canada are expected to attend the meeting in Cornwall to review pastoral activities from 2004-2005, and to discuss new projects and activities for the next few years.

This Plenary Assembly will mark the end of the two-year term of Most Reverend Brendan M. O’Brien, Archbishop of St. John’s, as President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. The Bishops of Canada will elect his successor on 19 September. The names of the new members of the Executive Committee and the Permanent Council will also be made known at the conclusion of the meeting. These two committees coordinate the projects and activities of the CCCB and ensure the execution of decisions ratified during the Plenary Assembly.

The bishops will also receive a number of reports, among them one from the Special Taskforce on the review of From Pain to Hope, the CCCB guidelines on sexual abuse. Other Plenary discussions will focus on the restructuring of the episcopal conference, the Synod on the Eucharist, the latest World Youth Day and the International Eucharistic Congress to be held in Quebec in 2008.

The CCCB is the national assembly of the bishops of Canada. Its offices support the bishops in their work by developing resources and providing specialists in different areas such theology, liturgy, social affairs, Christian education and communications. The CCCB is involved in matters of national and international scope, and provides the bishops a forum where they can share their experience and insight on the life of the Church and the major events that shape our society. It develops many resources for the faith education of children and adults, publishes resources used in eucharistic and other liturgical celebrations, organizes conferences and offers numerous services to Canadian dioceses.
