(CCCB – Ottawa)… The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace has already sent $300,000 to countries in Latin America that have been left devastated in the past few days by Hurricane Stan, and to countries in Asia that have been left in ruins by a violent earthquake.

Development and Peace is sending $100,000 in aid to the victims in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan, and $200,000 to the victims in the affected regions of Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador.

In both cases, aid will be distributed through Caritas Internationalis, the Catholic Church international network committed to humanitarian aid, development and social services. Caritas Internationalis is made up of 162 Catholic relief, development, and social service organizations in 200 countries and territories. Development and Peace, founded in 1967 by the Bishops of Canada, is the official Catholic overseas development agency for Canada and the Canadian arm of Caritas Internationalis.

Most Reverend André Gaumond, Archbishop of Sherbrooke and President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), invites everyone to give generously. “There have been numerous catastrophes this year that have affected the lives of millions of people. We understand that donors have been repeatedly solicited; however, those that fell victim to the most recent disaster also need our help. They are counting on us; on our prayers and our donations, both of which are necessary to offer hope to those who have lost everything – their families, homes and jobs.”

Development and Peace gratefully accepts all public donations either by phone (1-888-664-3387), internet (www.devp.org) or by cheque (please note either “Pakistan-Asia Earthquake” or “Hurricane Stan”) to the following address: Development and Peace, 5633 Sherbrooke St. E., Montreal, Quebec, H1N 1A3.
