Death of Most Rev. Basil Filevich, Ukrainian Bishop Emeritus of Saskatoon

(CCCB Ottawa)…Most Reverend Basil Filevich, Ukrainian Bishop emeritus of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, died 20 April at the age of 88.

Born in 1918 in Stryj, Alberta, he was ordained to the priesthood on 12 April 1942. Named Ukrainian Eparchial Bishop of Saskatoon by Pope John Paul II on 5 December 1983, he was ordained Bishop on 27 February 1984. He retired on 6 November 1995, after the Holy Father had accepted his resignation. 

Prayers will be held on Wednesday, 26 April 2006, at 7:00 p.m., at St. George Cathedral in Saskatoon. Funeral services will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, 27 April 2006.
