Your Eminence:

It is with consternation that we have learned of the abductions of the President of CELAM, Most Reverend Jorge Enrique Jiménez Carvajal, and of Rev. Desiderio Orejuela that occurred yesterday, 11 November 2002.

Attacks against the integrity and security of bishops and all persons involved in the Church appear totally inadmissible to us; blind violence is an approach that is always ultimately futile. This is a most troubling development that is of deep concern to us.

We are also profoundly affected because of the close mutual collaboration that unites CELAM and the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. We pray that those who have committed this act of violence free Bishop Jiménez and his companion safe and sound, and cease this senseless escalation of violence.

Be assured, Your Eminence, of my prayers and those of all the Bishops of Canada.

Bishop of Saint-Jean-Longueuil
President
Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops
