Dear Archbishop Constant:

Over the past weeks, the events in your country have been a source of deep concern for Canadians, in particular among Canadian citizens of Haitian ancestry as well as your brother Bishops of Canada.

As an extension of the statement issued by the recent Meeting of the Bishops of the Church in America, a copy of which is attached, I wish to express the special solidarity of the Bishops of Canada with you and all the citizens of Haiti as your country passes through these present trials.

The Catholics of Canada, and in particular a number of Christian communities made up of Catholic Haitians, share a common concern with the people of Haiti. In this spirit, and together with the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CCODP), I have issued a message to the Bishops of Canada to encourage Catholics in contributing generously toward CCODP and the work of reconstructing the social and economic institutions of your country. This appeal has already received the support of Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte, Archbishop of Montreal.

Realizing that during these times of great tension it is important to manifest our unity in faith, I assure you not only of the solidarity of the Bishops of Canada in these difficult times, but also of our prayers for you and all the people of Haiti.

Sincerely in Our Lord,

+ Brendan M. O’Brien
Archbishop of St. John’s
Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops
