The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops welcomes the announcement today by the Holy Father that Pope John Paul II will be beatified later this year on May 1.

Pope John Paul II left a major mark on the Church and on the world. His vision and energy were a continuation of the Second Vatican Council. His Encyclicals and other writings are a lasting source of inspiration and teaching. The impact of his magnetic personality remains at the centre of many happy memories. He continues to attract world-wide attention, not only in the number of pilgrims who visit his tomb each year, but in international celebrations such as World Youth Day which he founded 26 years ago.

With his upcoming beatification, Pope John Paul II remains a sign and instrument of God’s Providence, and a contemporary example of how Our Lord raises up shepherds and leaders for his flock.
