(CCCB-Cap-de-la-Madeleine) An international agency founded by Pope Pius XI in 1926 for providing humanitarian and pastoral aid to countries in the East is establishing a presence in Canada.

The Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA), under the guidance of Ottawa Archbishop Marcel Gervais, will seek to raise funds to support the pastoral mission of the Catholic Churches of the East, provide humanitarian assistance to those in need, promote Christian unity and interreligious understanding and collaboration, and educate people in Western countries about the history, cultures, peoples and Churches of the East.

Board of Directors, chaired by Archbishop Gervais, also includes His Eminence Marc Cardinal Ouellet of Quebec, Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, S.J., of Halifax, Metropolitan Archbishop Michael Bzdel, C.Ss.R., of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Winnipeg and Archbishop Adam Exner, O.M.I., of Vancouver. The board’s founding meeting took place at the Annual Plenary meeting of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB).

CNEWA carries out its work in the Middle East, Northeast Africa, India, Eastern Europe and some other countries throughout the world. Based in New York City, the Association plans to expand its presence through many Western countries, with Canada being a natural first step in this process. It has been based in the United states for a number of years.

More information concerning CNEWA and its works maybe obtained from its website at: http://www.cnewa.org/.

The colours of the web site represent the official heraldic insignia of Bishops. The green corresponds to the galero (ecclesiastical hat) and six tassels on each side that make up the crest and supporters of the coat of arms of each Bishop while the gold represents the processional cross.
