(CCCB – Ottawa)… Pope Benedict XVI released today his first encyclical. Entitled Deus Caritas Est – “God is love” – it discusses the Christian understanding of love and commitment to the others.

An Encyclical is a letter from the Pope that is addressed to the bishops around the world, and also to the clergy, persons in consecrated life and all the faithful. It is generally a text of significant teaching value. Throughout his 26 years of pontificate, Pope Benedict XVI’s predecessor, Pope John Paul II, published 14 encyclicals.

It is not surprising that the presentation of this encyclical was made the day after an international congress on charity which was organized by the Pontifical Council “Cor Unum”, which coordinates international initiatives in the Church to help victims of catastrophes and for the development of people.

The congress, which took place on 23 and 24 January, brought together more than 200 participants, including bishops, diplomats, heads of international aid organizations and delegates from non-governmental organizations.

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) was represented by Most Reverend Bertrand Blanchet, Archbishop of Rimouski, who is member of the CCCB Episcopal Commission for Social Affairs.

The encyclical will be available from CCCB Publications on 1 February 2006 at the price of $6.95 (plus tax and shipping).
