Death of the Most Reverend Clément Fecteau, Bishop Emeritus of Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière

The Most Reverend Clément Fecteau, Bishop Emeritus of Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière, Quebec, died on 31 December 2017 at the Enfant-Jésus Hospital in Québec City at the age of 84. After 12 years as Bishop of the Diocese of Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière, he had submitted his resignation to the Holy Father upon reaching the age of 75, as required by the Code of Canon Law, and which was accepted on 18 October 2008.

Bishop Fecteau was born on 20 April 1933 in Sainte-Marie-de-Beauce, Quebec. After his studies at the College de Lévis, he continued his formation at the Grand Séminaire de Québec and obtained a degree in theology. He was ordained a priest in 1957 for the Archdiocese of Québec. On 28 June 1989, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Québec and, on 10 May 1996, Bishop of Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière. As a member of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, Bishop Fecteau served on the Commission for Liturgy and Sacraments of the French Sector (1994-1997 and 2005-2008), member and Chairman of the former Commission for Relations with Associations of Priests, Religious and Laity (1997-2000), the former Committee for Programs and Priorities (1999-2001), the Permanent Council (1999-2003), and the former Commission for the Evangelization of Peoples (2001-2005). Bishop Fecteau as well was the Bishop ponens with the Canadian French Sector of the Pontifical Mission Societies (2001-2005).

His remains will lie in state in his native parish church, Sainte-Marie-de-Beauce, on 11 January, from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm, followed by a celebration of the Word. The next day, 12 January, his remains will be transferred to Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière where there will be visitation at Sainte-Anne Cathedral from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, and on Saturday, the day of his funeral, 13 January, from 10:00 am to 1:45 pm. The funeral Mass will be at 2:00 p.m. and will be presided by the Most Rev. Yvon Joseph Moreau, O.C.S.O., Bishop Emeritus and Diocesan Administrator of Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière, following which the coffin will be laid to rest in the cathedral crypt.
