Frequently Asked Questions about Exorcism

The Holy See in 2004 amended the typical edition of the Latin text for that part of the Roman Ritual entitled De exorcismis et supplicationibus quibusdam. Following the same approach used in the translations of all liturgical texts and ritual books for the Latin Church, the Bishops of each country, with the authorization of the Holy See, developed and approved the official translations for their particular country. In 2006, the French-language edition was published for use in Canada; in 2017, the English-language edition for use in the United States; and in 2018, the English-language edition for use in Canada. These ritual books are exclusively for the use of Bishops and the exorcists whom a Bishop may appoint.

During the process of preparing and approving the English-language edition of the ritual for use in the United States, the Secretariat of Divine Worship of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) developed a list of frequently asked questions on exorcism and its use in the Church's liturgical life. The answers were provided by specialists in this ministry and by experts in canon law.

Since so much of the common perception of the nature and application of exorcism is shaped by the exaggerations of movies and television programs, the USCCB Committee on Divine Worship approved dissemination of these basic questions and answers, in hopes that clear information is brought to bear on a topic that is often shrouded in mystery or misinformation.

Recognizing the importance of appropriate catechesis of this nature, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has obtained permission from the USCCB to prepare the following French-language translation and adaptation of its text "Frequently Asked Questions about Exorcism" for use on the CCCB website.
