Canadian Government will match donations for the Sahel (West Africa)
Saturday, August 11, 2012
The Government of Canada announced this week it will match dollar for dollar donations made to registered Canadian charities between August 7 and September 30, 2012. The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CCODP) is eligible for this matching program.
On May 29, 2012, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) and CCODP announced a joint campaign to respond to the serious food shortage and drought in the Sahel region of West Africa. In a letter sent to the Bishops of Canada, June 7, 2012, the Most Reverend Richard Smith, Archbishop of Edmonton and President of the CCCB, invited his brother Bishops to encourage their parishes to participate in the CCCB-CCODP joint emergency appeal. Parishes were invited to organize special collections before September 16. On line donations can also be made to Development and Peace at http://www.devp.org/en/emergencies/west-africa.
Staff from Development and Peace are currently in the Sahel. Their on-site information is available on a blog that can be accessed from the CCODP website, www.devp.org. In addition, a team from Salt + Light TV was on location with the Development and Peace observers. The videos from the Sahel will be available later this month on Salt + Light.
