175 Arch TorontoOn December 17, 2016, the Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto launched a year-long celebration of its 175th anniversary. A number of historical and spiritual activities are planned to commemorate the anniversary, including a large-scale celebration at St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica on May 30, 2017. Originally part of the Diocese of Kingston, Pope Gregory XVI on December 17, 1841, formally erected the Diocese of Toronto and named the Most Reverend Michael Power its first Bishop. Bishop Power had served as a priest first in the Archdiocese of Québec and then the Diocese of Montreal where he was Vicar General at the time of his appointment to Toronto. His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Collins, Archbishop of Toronto, has expressed his “gratitude to those, past and present, who have made incredible contributions to our city, province and country, inspired by their faith.”
