CCCB President writes to Cardinal Bertone and to the new Secretary of State

On August 31, 2013, the Holy See announced that Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of His Eminence Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone, and has named the Most Reverend Pietro Parolin as Secretary of State. Following this announcement, the Most Reverend Richard Smith, Archbishop of Edmonton and President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, has written to Cardinal Bertone and to Archbishop Parolin. In his letter to Cardinal Bertone, Archbishop Smith conveys the heartfelt thanks of the Bishops of Canada for his many faithful years of service to the Universal Church and assures him of his continuing prayers and fraternal support as he retires. In his letter to Archbishop Parolin, the CCCB President extends the congratulations of the Bishops of Canada on his nomination as Secretary of State. Archbishop Parolin takes possession of his new office on October 15, until when the Holy Father has asked Cardinal Bertone to retain his present responsibilities.
