CNEWA launches emergency Middle East campaign to aid Christians

Tuesday, May 19, 2015

prendergastThe Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) is appealing “to Canadians to continue their support for families fleeing the barbaric violence perpetrated by ISIS and the unresolved Syrian civil war.” Among the millions affected are the once vibrant Christian communities of Syria and Iraq, which may for the first time in 2000 years be forced from their homeland. In 2014, Canadians donated more than $1 million to CNEWA in order to support the peoples and Churches of the Middle East. Along with this Canadian contribution, an additional $6 million in donations was made to CNEWA globally to aid struggling Christians during 2015. To mark the papal agency’s 10th anniversary in Canada this year, the Most Reverend Terrence Prendergast, S.J., Archbishop of Ottawa and Chair of CNEWA Canada, has published a message encouraging support for its mission.
