Letter of the CCCB President on the emergency appeal for West Africa
Friday, June 8, 2012
The Most Reverend Richard Smith, Archbishop of Edmonton and President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), has written to the Bishops of Canada on the emergency appeal for Western Africa and the Sahel. In his letter, he points out the importance of mobilizing resources in response to the deteriorating situation in the Sahel and its critical food shortage. Archbishop Smith invites his brother Bishops to encourage their parishes to participate in the CCCB-CCODP (Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace) joint emergency appeal. The proposed dates for parish collections are from now until Sunday, September 16, 2012, inclusive. “May the prayers and contributions of Canadian Catholics to assist West Africa and the Sahel be an expression of our common commitment to sustaining life and shaping a future of justice, peace and solidarity for all our brothers and sisters,” the President’s letter concludes.
