Thursday, June 4, 2015

Events have been taking place in dioceses across Canada involving various local partners to mark the closing of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), in addition to the May 31 to June 3 celebrations organized in the Archdiocese of Ottawa and the Archdiocese of Vancouver. In the Archdiocese of Edmonton, a 24-hour vigil took place in front of City Hall with the live-streamed release of the TRC Summary Report.  In the Diocese of Saskatoon, a commemoration was held at Victoria Park in Saskatoon, also with live-streaming from the Ottawa event. In the Archdiocese of Winnipeg, the Most Reverend Richard Gagnon, Archbishop of Winnipeg, issued a pastoral letter to the First Nations communities and to all the People of God in the Archdiocese. Also in Winnipeg, a gathering called “Time for Reconciliation” was held at the University of Winnipeg in collaboration with local faith groups, the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, the Province of Manitoba, the City of Winnipeg, and the public libraries.
