Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter

Friday, December 7, 2012

Following an earlier consultation of the Bishops of Canada, the Holy See has extended the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter to include the territory of Canada. The Ordinariate has established the Deanery of St. John the Baptist to minister to groups of Anglicans and Anglican clergy in Canada who come into full communion with the Catholic Church in accordance with the norms of the Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum Coetibus.

The decision by the Holy See and the establishment of the Deanery were announced in a joint news release issued 7 December 2012 by the Archdiocese of Toronto and the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter, based in Houston, Texas.

The news release also announces the appointment of Father Lee Kenyon of Calgary as Dean of the Deanery of St. John the Baptist. He was appointed by Msgr. Jeffrey Steenson, P.H, the Ordinary, or head, of the Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter. Father Kenyon was first ordained into the Church of England in 2005 and, after entering the communion of the Catholic Church, ordained a Catholic priest in June 2012 for the Ordinariate by the the Most Reverend Fred Henry, Bishop of Calgary.

His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Collins, Archbishop of Toronto, is the delegate of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and also the representative of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), for the implementation of Anglicanorum Coetibus in Canada.
