Saint Michael’s College confers Honorary Degree on Bishop Anthony Tonnos

On November 5, 2011, the University of Saint Michael‘s College, Toronto, conferred the degree Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa, on the Most Reverend Anthony Tonnos, Bishop emeritus of Hamilton. This honor was in recognition of his contributions particularly in the areas of Catholic education and Catholic health care during his 50 years of priesthood and 27 years as Bishop.
Bishop Tonnos was installed as the eighth Bishop of the Diocese of Hamilton in 1984 and retired in August 2010. In 2005, he received the Performance Citation Award, the highest distinction given in Catholic Health Care in Canada. Earlier this year, he received a Doctor of Theology degree (honoris causa) from St. Jerome’s University, Waterloo, Ontario, and last year an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Niagara University in Lewiston, New York.
