Statement by the Permanent Synod of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church

Friday, December 13, 2013

Kiev_Decembre_2013The Most Reverend Ken Nowakowski, Ukrainian Catholic Eparch of New Westminster, B.C., is a member of the Permanent Synod of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC). The Permanent Synod met earlier this month in Kiev, and the Synod Members issued a statement on the current situation in Ukraine. On December 11, 2013, a delegation of four Bishops from the Synod, including Bishop Nowakowski, went to Independence Square in Kyiv to express their solidarity with those on the square following the siege that had occurred during the cover of night.  They spoke to the protestors, assuring them the Church stood in peace with them, and also spoke to the military and special forces, urging them not to commit violence against their own people, especially not against the youth who had instigated the uprising with hopes of Ukraine joining the European Union.
