The Episcopal Commission for Liturgy and the Sacraments – English Sector meets four times a year. It assists the Bishops of Canada in promoting the liturgical life of the Church by:

• Studying and researching emerging liturgical developments and questions, and informing the members of the Conference;
• Providing ritual and liturgical books for use in Canada;
• Promoting the observance of the Guidelines for Liturgical Publications;
• Overseeing the preparation of liturgical educational materials for publication;
• Regulating pastoral liturgical action throughout Canada and promoting studies and necessary experiments whenever there is a question of adaptation to be proposed to the Apostolic See (cf. Sacrosanctum Concilium, no. 44);
• Assisting the President of the CCCB in maintaining relations with the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments, the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL) and other national and international groups;
• Maintaining relations with the Commission épiscopale de liturgie et des sacrements (France);
• Meeting on a regular basis with the Director of the National Liturgy Office (NLO) and the members of the National Council on Liturgy for ongoing consultation, discussion and collaboration concerning liturgical matters;
• Consulting on a regular basis the National Council for Liturgical Music in the process of reviewing music1 and approving hymns for liturgical use in Canada.

The National Council for Liturgy is a body of seven members (two from each region of the country – West, Ontario, and Atlantic – and a chairperson) who further advise the Episcopal Commission on liturgical matters and who bring to the Commission and office staff the questions and concerns of liturgy at the diocesan and parish levels. The National Council for Liturgy meets once a year with the Episcopal Commission and office staff.

Several committees are also operating at the national level in order to assist the Commission and Office in their mandate.
The National Council for Liturgical Music is a body of at least four members (one from each region of the country – West, Ontario, and Atlantic – and a chairperson) who further advise the Episcopal Commission on sacred music matters.
