Most Reverend Brendan M. O’Brien, Archbishop of St. John’s and President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, issued the following comment today, following reports of the deteriorating condition of Pope John Paul II:

“The worsening condition of the Holy Father causes great sadness and concern in the Church and in the world. United in sorrow and in faith, the Bishops of Canada join Catholics in this country and throughout the world, together with other Christians and members of all faith communities, in praying for Pope John Paul II. I encourage pastors and all the faithful to accompany the Holy Father with prayers in his suffering.”

The following is a possible prayer that could be used in the present circumstances:

Lord Jesus, Good Shepherd,
look kindly on John Paul II,
your vicar on earth,
and grant him relief from his sufferings.

To this herald who has bravely proclaimed your Gospel,
give the consolation of your word.
To this faithful guardian of your universal Church,
grant courage and protection.
To this priest who comforted and anointed the sick,
bring peace in his own time of trial.

Hear the prayers of those who trust in you,
O Risen Lord and Saviour,
who are seated at the right hand of the Father,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
