Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
On Sunday, October 23, 2011 the Catholic church throughout the world will observe World Mission Sunday. Instituted in 1926 by Pope Pius XI, this year it has been given the theme “Together in Faith.”
On this Sunday, Catholics throughout the world are invited to support the mission work of the Church by their prayers and through their financial contributions to the special collection taken up at the weekend Masses.
The distribution of the proceeds of this collection is overseen by the Pontifical Mission Societies. The money is used to reach out in faith to the more than two-thirds of the world’s peoples who have yet to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ and to financially support the work of the more than 1150 missionary dioceses of Asia, Africa, the Pacific Islands and Latin America.
World Mission Sunday celebrates our unity as a universal church. It is an opportunity for all of us, each within the context of our own personal ability and vocation, to participate in our Church’s global outreach and missionary activity. “Together in Faith” we support the proclamation of the gospel by Missionaries and the life sustaining ministry of our Church among the suffering and the poor of our world.
Thanking you for your participation in and support of this annual celebration.
Fraternally yours in Christ,
Bishop Peter Hundt
Bishop of Corner Brook and Labrador
