The World Day of the Sick will be celebrated, as it is every year, on 11 February. This annual observance was instituted in 1992 by Pope John Paul II.
This event is an opportunity to remind Catholics of the necessity of:
- ensuring the sick have quality health care and better conditions,
- encouraging Christians communities to be involved in pastoral health care,
- recalling the need to provide spiritual and moral formation for those working with the sick,
- encouraging the involvement of volunteers,
- promoting reflection on the meaning of suffering,
- and inviting all those involved in medical care to appreciate the importance of their healing mission.
Various documents are available to help prepare for this day. These include an information package which can be ordered from the Catholic Health Association of Canada (CHAC) website. The documentation has been produced by the CHAC in collaboration with the Centre for Pastoral Health and Social Services, and the Archdiocese of Quebec and its pastoral services.
