Apostolic Administrator Appointed for the Diocese of Hearst
Wednesday, July 19 2006(CCCB – Ottawa)… His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI this week appointed , Bishop of Moosonee, as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Hearst. The appointment was made following the retirement of Most Rev. André Vallée, P.M.E., in November 2005.
Bishop Cadieux will have all the faculties of a residential Bishop while there is a vacancy in the diocese, and will also continue with his responsibilities to the Diocese of Moosonee. In addition to Hearst, the Diocese of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, also depends on the pastoral services of an Apostolic Administrator, through Most Rev. Terrence Prendergast, S.J., Archbishop of Halifax.
Bishop Cadieux was born in 1940 in Alfred, Ontario. Member of the religious community of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1966 and appointed Bishop of Moosonee in 1991.
The Diocese of Hearst has 30 diocesan priests, 6 religious sisters, 3 permanent deacons and 18 lay pastoral assistants who serve a Catholic population of 32,000 in 39 parishes and missions. North of Hearst, in the Diocese of Moosonee, Bishop Cadieux, with the help of 3 religious priests, 1 permanent deacon, 1 religious brother and 4 sisters, serve a Catholic population of 4,000, mainly Aboriginal, in 18 parishes and missions.
