Apostolic Administrator Named for the Diocese of Yarmouth
Thursday, January 24 2002(CCCB – Ottawa) – His Holiness Pope John Paul II today named Most Rev. Terrence Prendergast, S. J., Archbishop of Halifax, as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Yarmouth. The appointment was made following the nomination of the previous Bishop of Yarmouth, Most Rev. James Wingle, as Bishop of the Diocese of St. Catharine, Ontario. Archbishop Prendergast will have all the faculties of a residential bishop during the vacancy in the diocese and will also continue with his responsibilities for the Archdiocese of Halifax.
Archbishop Prendergast was born on February 19, 1944, in Montreal, Quebec. He entered the Jesuit novitiate in 1961, was ordained to the priesthood in 1972, named Auxiliary Bishop of Toronto in 1995, and Archbishop of Halifax in 1998.
The Diocese of Yarmouth has a Catholic population of 39,500 served by 20 diocesan priests, 5 religious order priests, 2 permanent deacons, 29 religious sisters and brothers, and 4 pastoral agents in 39 parishes and missions.
