Death of Most Rev. James L. Doyle, Bishop Emeritus of Peterborough

(CCCB-Ottawa) Most Rev. James L. Doyle, Bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Peterborough, Ontario, died April 22, 2004, at the age of 74. He had served as Bishop of Peterborough for 26 years, from 1976 until his retirement in 2002.
Born in Chatham, Ontario, on June 20, 1929, he was ordained to the priesthood in London, Ontario, in 1954 after completing his theological training at St. Peter’s Seminary in London. He served in many parishes throughout the Diocese of London, including the Cathedral where he was the pastor.
He was active within the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), serving as the chairman of the English Sector Commission for Liturgy from 1979 to 1989 and as the CCCB episcopal representative with the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL) and was ICEL vice-president 1991-1997.
Visitation will be at Kaye Funeral Home, 593 George St. North, Peterborough, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Sunday, April 25, and then at the diocesan Cathedral, St. Peter-in-Chains, 2 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Monday, April 26. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27, presided by Bishop Nicola De Angelis, C.F.I.C., Bishop of Peterborough. There will be a vigil service at the Cathedral on Monday evening at 7 p.m.
