Death of Most Rev. Louis-de-Gonzague Langevin, Bishop Emeritus of Saint-Hyacinthe

(CCCB – Ottawa) – Most Reverend Louis-de-Gonzague Langevin, M.Afr., Bishop Emeritus of Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, passed away July 21, 2003, at 82 years of age.

Visitation will take place at the Chancery Office (1900 Girouard St. West, in Saint-Hyacinthe), Sunday, July 27, 2003, from 10:00 a.m. The remains will be transferred to Saint-Hyacinthe-le-Confesseur Cathedral for a service at 8:00 p.m.

The funeral service will be held Monday, July 28, 2003, at 2:00 p.m., at Saint-Hyacinthe Cathedral.

Born at Oka, Québec, Bishop Langevin was ordained in Ottawa, Ontario, on February 2,1950, for the Missionaries of Africa (Missionaires d’Afrique – Pères Blancs). He was named Auxiliary Bishop of Saint-Hyacinthe on August 9, 1974, and Bishop of Saint-Hyacinthe on July 14, 1979.

As member of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), Bishop Langevin served on a number of Episcopal Commissions including Missions, Social Communications, Canon Law / Inter-Rite and Ecumenism. He retired from active ministry on April 7,1998.
