Most Rev. Paul Marchand Named Bishop of TimminsMonday, March 08 1999
(OTTAWA – CCCB)… His Holiness Pope John Paul II today named Most Rev. Paul Marchand, SMM, Auxiliary Bishop of Ottawa as the new Bishop of Timmins. The Diocese of Timmins has been without a bishop since December 27, 1997, when Most Rev. Gilles Cazabon, OMI, was named as Bishop of Saint Jerome.
Bishop Marchand was born in Lafontaine, Ontario, on April 17, 1937, ordained to the priesthood in 1961 and received his episcopal ordination in 1993 as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Ottawa. He is a member of the Monfort Missionaries, and has served as provincial superior and a member of the Extraordinary General Council of Montfort Missionaries from 1990 to 1993.
The new Bishop of Timmins is well known for his pastoral approach. He has coordinated French pastoral services in the Archdiocese of Ottawa since 1993 and was Vicar General.
The Diocese of Timmins has a Catholic population of 55,000 in 33 parishes and missions, with 28 diocesan priests, 5 priests from religious orders, 7 permanent deacons, and 44 religious sisters and brothers.
