National Forum Examines Upcoming Synod of Bishops

Friday, June 09 2000

(Ottawa – CCCB) … The Episcopal Commission for Relations with Associations of Clergy, Consecrated Life and the Laity held its annual Forum on June 2-3 which focused on the theme of the next Synod of Bishops to be held in Rome in October 2001. Its theme is the Bishop as Servant of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for the Hope of the World.

Participants from 17 Catholic associations, including the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Women’s League of Canada (CWL), Canadian Catholic Campus Ministry, Catholic Health Association of Canada, and Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace, as well as the four member bishops of the Commission discussed the ministry of the bishop at the dawn of the third millennium.

The presentations and workshops examined the mission of the bishop and his ministry and relationship with the People of God at the diocesan level. Three participants explored one of the forum questions, If I were bishop, from the perspectives of spirituality, hope and preaching. Finally, the participants offered several suggestions for the CCCB delegates who will participate in the Synod.

This was the fifth national forum organized by the Episcopal Commission. For both the bishops and the national Catholic associations represented, these annual meetings provide a valuable mechanism to share information, exchange opinions and express concerns as well as examine the life of the Church in Canada.
