New Archbishop for Moncton
Wednesday, November 27 1996OTTAWA — (CCCB) Pope John Paul II today appointed Father Ernest Léger as Archbishop of Moncton, New Brunswick. Archbishop-elect Léger has been the Archdiocesan Administrator since Bishop Donat Chiasson retired in 1995.
Archbishop-elect Léger, 52, was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia and ordained a priest on May 11, 1968. He studied theology at Saint-Coeur de Marie Seminary in Halifax, holds a Master`s Degree in Sociology of Religion from Laval University in Quebec City, and a Masters in Canon Law from Saint Paul University in Ottawa.
He has served at many parishes in the Archdiocese including Moncton, Saint-Louis-de-Kent, Saint-Charles, Rogersville, Irishtown, Sackville and St-Paul-de-Kent, where until today he has been the pastor at St. Paul’s Parish.
The Archdiocese of Moncton has a population of 105,000 Catholics in 52 parishes and 11 missions served by 65 diocesan priests and 22 priests from religious orders.
