New Auxiliary Bishop Named to Archdiocese of Toronto
Wednesday, April 30 1997OTTAWA (CCCB) His Holiness Pope John Paul II today appointed Father Anthony Meagher as Auxiliary Bishop of Toronto. At present, Father Meagher serves as Pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Bramalea, Ontario. Bishop elect Meagher will assist the current Archbishop of Toronto, the Most Reverend Aloysius M. Ambrozic.
Bishop elect Meagher was born on November 17, 1940 in Oshawa, Ontario and was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Toronto on June 17, 1972. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto in 1964 and a Bachelor in Theology from the St. Augustine’s Seminary in Toronto, in 1972.
Bishop elect Meagher served as Associate Pastor at St. Michael’s Cathedral in Toronto from 1972 until 1976, Associate Pastor at St. John the Evangelist Parish in Whitby, Ontario from 1976 until 1980, Rector of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Whitby, Ontario from 1980 until 1981, Pastor of Blessed Trinity Parish in Willowdale, Ontario from 1981 until 1992 and Pastor at St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Bramalea, Ontario from 1992 until his nomination today.
The Archdiocese of Toronto has a Catholic population of 1,420,395 in 217 parishes and missions and is served by 262 diocesan priests, 506 religious priests, 116 permanent deacons and 1,091 religious. The Archbishop is assisted by three other Auxiliary Bishops in addition to Bishop-elect Meagher.
