New Bishop Named for Amos

(CCCB-Ottawa)… His Holiness Pope John Paul II today named Most Rev. Eugène Tremblay, current Auxiliary Bishop of Quebec City, as Bishop of Amos, Quebec. He will be succeeding Most Rev. Gérard Drainville, whose resignation has been accepted by the Holy Father. Most Rev. Drainville was the Bishop of Amos for over 25 years.

Born in 1936 in Saint-Hilarion, in the region of Charlevoix, Quebec, Most Rev. Tremblay completed his theological studies at the Grand Séminaire in Quebec City. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1962 and to the episcopate in 1995. He has been active with the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) serving as a member of the Episcopal Commission of Liturgy – French Sector, and co-presided the Special Task Force for the Revision of “From Pain to Hope” which addresses the issues of the Church and sexual abuse.

The Diocese of Amos has a Catholic population of 95,030 in 60 parishes and missions, served by 23 diocesan priests, 18 religious order priests, 111 religious sisters and brothers and 52 lay pastoral assistants.
