Seventh World Meeting of Families in Milan

(CCCB – Ottawa)… The Archdiocese of Milan, Italy, will host the Seventh World Meeting of Families, May 30 to June 3, 2012. The Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI will also attend part of the celebration during his pastoral visit to the diocese. The world meeting’s theme, chosen by the Pope, is “The Family: Work and celebration”. The delegation from the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) to the meeting has been organized in collaboration with the Catholic Organization for Life and Family (COLF). The Most Reverend Noël Simard, Bishop of Valleyfield and Chair of the COLF Board will lead the other CCCB delegates: Dr. John Zucchi and Mrs. Cecilia Zucchi from Montreal, Mrs. Amélie Martineau-Lavallée from Quebec City, and Ms. Michèle Boulva, Director of COLF. Mmes. Zucchi and Martineau-Lavallée are members of the COLF Board.
A number of Canadian dioceses will be sending delegations. These include the Archdiocese of Quebec City and its Archbishop, the Most Reverend Gérald C. Lacroix; the Diocese of Saint-Jean-Longueuil and its Auxiliary Bishop, the Most Reverend Louis Dicaire; the Diocese of Amos and its Bishop, the Most Reverend Gilles Lemay; the Archdiocese of Toronto; the Archdiocese of Montreal; the Archdiocese of Sherbrooke; the Archdiocese of Gatineau; and the Diocese of Trois-Rivières. About 50 Canadians in all will participate in the Milan world meeting of families.
The program for the gathering includes catecheses, conferences, Eucharistic celebrations and time for family entertainment. Pope Benedict will arrive June 1, when he will make his first address to the people of Milan and also participate in a special concert in his honor at the theatre La Scala. On Saturday, June 2, at 11:00 a.m., the Holy Father will travel to the San Siro Stadium to meet with youth who are preparing for Confirmation. At 8:30 p.m., he will participate with families in a one-hour “Feast of Testimonies” at the Bresso airport park north of Milan, where the world meeting is being held. On June 3 at 10:00 a.m., the Holy Father will preside at the Eucharistic celebration closing the event.
The previous World Meeting of Families was held in Mexico in January 2009. The gatherings are under the responsibility of the Pontifical Council for the Family.
