UN Declaration on Aboriginal Peoples

Thursday, June 10 2010

The March 3, 2010 Speech from the Throne had announced that “A growing number of states have given qualified recognition to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Our Government will take steps to endorse this aspirational document in a manner fully consistent with Canada’s Constitution and laws.”

In order to support the federal government in its intention, and following an earlier recommendation by the Canadian Catholic Aboriginal Council as well as consultations with the CCCB Executive Committee and the Commission for Justice and Peace, our President Bishop Pierre Morissette has agreed to co-sign a letter to federal Ministers Cannon, Moore and Strahl. This letter had been drafted by Kairos and is co-signed by the Presidents or heads of the respective Churches and Church organizations that participate in Kairos.
